My Work experience has been like a recipe, at first it didn’t go quite right but after prating a few time I eventually got it right. The first part of my work experience I was directing the filming of nativity play for a special needs school, things didn’t end on the best terms as we found that we bit of more than we can chew, I defiantly benefited from this experience as it gave me the opportunity to work with children and it also gave me the chance to work to some else standard. One thing I think we did wrong was that if there was a problem we tried to deal with it ourself rather than talking to the people involved and therefore the problem escalated. Most of the problems came about because of lack of communication between us and the school and Steve, also the school didn’t understand the production process which made or job a lot harder. This experience taught me that when starting a new piece of work make sure the client know what happens during the production process, stay in clear communication at all times.

My second part of my work experience was the i produced some short video’s for a self development company, learning from my experience from the school, I prepared for my meeting by drawing up a list of question and a list of things that may possibly go wrong, so from the start we both had an understanding of what i could accomplish and what he wanted from the videos. I felt that this project was very successful we met all of the deadlines and our client was very happy with the work the team and i produced. I learnt from this the more prepared you are the smoother the whole process will run.it taught me to be resourceful and take incentive in areas i haven’t done before, such as this time i was responsible to find actors, location and create and manage a crew,

My third Piece of work experience was making radio pilots for KithandKin productions. A radio show called my favourite things, where a guest would come in the radio studio and talk through the high and lows of there lives. This project was interesting for me as I got to meet some interesting people and it was challenge as a presenter to trying to get the guest to talk or stick to a topic and make sure they didn’t go of course. Our producer dropped out of the project early on, but we because we had been allocated are roles there was know one to pick up the role this meant that we all had to pick up the slack, but this also meant that something went wrong on the organisational side of thing. I choose to the radio pilot as i already had experience presenting and working in a TV studio I wanted the chance to work in a radio studio as i wanted to broaden my skills in other area of broadcast

Skype in the Radio Studio

When i was in the radio studio we started using the phone and setting it up, this gave me the idea of using skype in the radio studio, just in case we where struggling to get some in to the studio we could do it over skype or we could get relative of those we are interviewing get a bit of variety in to the show. We got paul in to help with set up, we first tried to here it though the normal system but the sound was extremely poor and we couldn’t hear it. So we tried patch through the phone line but that still caused problems as we could hear mani but she couldn’t hear us. We then tried to patch skype directly in to the main desk and we where finally where able to successful hear mani and she could hear us, even though we did not use it in the actual recording of the program, it was a useful process as it mean i can use it for future projects.

Feedback from Scripts 001 – 003

Positives:

Overall:

Gets the required message across very clearly
Actress is believable
Cutaways etc are good
Desk looks realistic

Close ups are good
Acting with blowing fringe is great
Hands on hips looks great also

Acting with putting hair back as expression of stress is great
Voice to camera looks great
Different camera angle from behind screen looks great

angles to camera are great, camera movements are great

Script 1

Could be quicker to get going, perhaps 2 seconds before she starts talking
has good balance of view to camera when talking to the viewer & looking away when talking with her boss

Can hear ‘we’re rolling’ at the start of the film!

could be quicker to get going – I think it takes 7 seconds as actress is fiddling with papers & this may loose some people, perhaps cut this sort of shot to 2 or 3 seconds

Beginning of the week Karen sent us the scripts with all the information, i looked over the scripts to get am idea of the kind of people i would be interviewing. I was a little bit worried as i had been seriously ill all week and my voice was fluxing meaning this might cause problems to audio tracks.

The first person we interviewed was Becky, we where very lucky with her as she was extremely easy-going and comfortable. I first had an inital chat with Becky she told me a little bit about herself then we proceed to talk through the script what she a written about and if there was anything she wanted to draw on. The whole recording seem to run quite smoothly, i felt we got all the information we needed, the only glitch we was that she focused on her child her a lot and it was hard to get her to talk about her later life we later found out that she thought she was to talk about her childhood rather than the progression through her life.

The second person we had in from Keith, from the second i met Keith i knew we had quite a character on our hands, he was a good guess because he was extremely talkative however this was also his pitfall as he wouldn’t stop talking and kept going of topic. Menen was the present, so i filled in for producer because Keith kept going of course i had to keep stopping the recording otherwise it would have slowed down the editing process, this however meant that when he did start talking on track it wasn’t recording so we missed out some of the information, also what made things harder was trying to communicate with the presenter to either wrap things up or to extend on a topic so i would have to interupt the recording to give direction . Keith was an interesting character to work with as he was a challenge and it gave me experience with and awkward character.

Our third guest was Alison she was a bit of shy character so it took a while to get her talking and make her feel comefortable, i was meant to be presenting but due to my illness my voice as crackling and fluxing which meant cause audio problems so we decided that Menen should present and that I would produce.

Back in the Radio Studio

After a short meeting with Karen we found out that she had found people who where intrested in getting involved,, so we thought it was time to have another practice in the radio studio, Karren had sent of the question to all of the people who shown intrest in the program, we aslo got a copy of the questions, we all decided on the when to record the show and when to get the guest in. After the meeting we all agreed that we would fill in the quesation ourselves so we get a feel for the show and try and predict how the show might go and try to start building up a script.

We had already previously ageeed that we where going to edit all three scripts diffrently we sat down as group went through the tape and decied which takes to use, after that Katy took main controll of t he editing apart from checking back for advice everynow and then. I was very happy with the work she was produced, the sound was clear and it was neatly put together with clean cuts.

We finished the videos a day a head of schedual and i was able to email the links to martin, he then phoned me the next day, he said he was impressed with the work we had done so far and there where some really strong work had been done, i asked if he could send me some more detailed feedback and we agreed that he would send me some more scripts that i could get to work on.

Time in the radio Studio

Jess, Menen and I decdied that we needed to refresh a skill in the Radio Studio so i went in and booked the radio studio, Menen had the most experience in studio so she was able to show us the ropes with the aid of Paul. From are previous meeting we had a rough idea of the kind of question, so we thought we could give them a test run.

We really struggled with on the spot anwering question on the spot, like your favourite childhood memoray or our favourite holiday or what we would put in room 101, we found we needed time to thinkver the question as they where so broad we found it hard to answer on the spot. This pratice turned out to be usefull as we come across a bit fall ealry on. We now know that we needed to give are guest the question befor they come in to record, this meant then when they came in they would be confident in there answers and making the recording flow and easier to edit.

Second meeting for my favourite things

In are second meeting we began to discussed the strucuting of the pilot. We discussed the the question we wanted to ask and the order we would ask. We decided to go through there lives in cronalogical order starting from there childhood to there current lives. I brought the idea of having a section based room 101, a section in the program where guest discuss something they would like to get rid of in the world, i thought this would be a good section to have in as i thought it would bring a humours twist to it, also to relax the guest, eveyone likes compalining and if the guest is a little uncomfetable it an easy topic to draw on that isnt to personal allow the guest to ease in to the interview.

First Meeting of Radio Pilot

We met today in the ICE building discussed the roles we ideally would like to do, i had previously spoke to Karen about wanting to be a presenter on this project, Jess wanted to be an Editor, Andy wanted to design the website and Menen want to co present and co produce any Nina was to be producer.

We than began to discuss the project what exactly was Karen idea as i had initially thought we where making podcast that we’re going to put up on the internet as pitch to some small radio station stations, but what Karen actually wanted to do was to make a product like a red letter day, it was more of an experience than a podcast. People would by it as a package the would come in for the day record the show then take a DVD back as a memorabilia.

The working name in progress is “my favourite things*, the idea is that guest come in and tell us about there lives from there childhood to there adult lives and supply us with a list of track that the feel resemble the mildstone in the life.

We when the decied we all go home and think about the show and start thinking about the structuer of the program.

Had my first Day of filming the videos for the itd.com videos, it feel like it was quite successful we got all three scripts shot i felt we had a very strong actor who fulfilled what i think my client wanted. Due to the fact we where only able to get an actress last minuet so we where unable get the scripts untill the night before, she wasn’t completely confident with in the scripts, so it took longer than we planned to get through the scripts, but this also gave us some time to explore a variety of different shots and angles, towards the end we began to run out of time, this is when i decided that we could edit all three differently, with different cut aways and a variety of shots given my client, so that he could choose what he liked and what he didn’t like. We also had a problems with ambient noise as half way through the shoot there was a drilling sound which affect the audio of the video so we had to wait for that stop so we could carry on filming again this put as behind schedule
